Visiting the Conference on Geodata for Inclusive Finance and Food

Blue Rhino attended the Conference on Geodata for Inclusive Finance and Food in Rotterdam on 16 February 2017. The conference was organized by NpM, the RaboBank Foundation and the Netherlands Space Office focusing on the use of technical applications based on satellite data to increase the outreach of financial services to rural areas and smallholder farmers.

Covering e-MFP 2015 in Luxembourg

Blue Rhino covered all the sessions of the European Microfinance Week 2015. The EMW is the annual opportunity for networking with European and international microfinance actors working in developing countries. With a quality program, specialist speakers, professional moderators and focused participation, the conference promotes good practice and facilitates synergy amongst associates.

Visiting the Green Inclusive Finance Conference

Blue Rhino attended the Green Inclusive Finance Conference in The Hague, 22 September 2015. The conference organized by NpM, FMO and Hivos focused on environmental impact in the inclusive finance sector. In the light of the World Climate Summit 2015 in Paris this autumn, the conference took the opportunity to mainstream the greening of the inclusive finance sector.

Multi-country desk review on CBFIs

Blue Rhino supported KMP with a country desk review on community-based financial institutions to explore existing practices by agencies promoting CBFI and SGs, considering the areas (geographic) where they operate and the people they serve. The focus of this paper is on IFAD-funded programmes in six countries: Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia. Attention has also been given to other programmes promoting similar models of time-bound savings groups.

The paper provides six recommendations:

Linking CBFIs (SGs) to the formal financial sector requires that some factors be fulfilled.
Aggregating CBFIs (SGs) so that they can access better services and effective market linkages
The need for formal financial institutions to understand the informal financial sector in order to better design products with features that add value to the users of informal financial services
Enhancing the mobile money infrastructure to expand financial inclusion among the unbanked
Establishing and supporting meso-level structures such as SaveNET in Zambia and the ASCA forum in Mozambique
Linking the informal financial sector with other government and NGO programmes that provide additional financial and non-financial services such as adult literacy programmes.

Our director Bert-Jan Ottens presented at the EMW 2014 on behalf of the Knowledge Management Partnership (KMP). The presentation focused on what is missing in agri-value chain finance training. Bert-Jan addressed the issues and challenges related to capacity building throughout the value chain. He followed up with lessons learned and possible improvements for agri-value chain finance training.
